Dear Student,

It is my pleasure to invite you to a special event held every year at
the Columbia University Medical Center, the 2011 Symposium in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery. This occasion is organized by students of the
College of Dental Medicine for the undergraduates of the New York City
metropolitan area interested in a professional career in health care.
The Symposium will show-case one of the most intriguing yet
underexplored surgical specialties of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
You will be presented with four speakers, including three OMS surgeons
and a prosthetics expert, all of whom are eminent NYC specialists,
educators, and dedicated practitioners. The doctors have kindly agreed
to present some of the most intriguing cases in their respective areas
of expertise, including trauma care, orthognathic surgery, head and neck
cancer, facial reconstruction, and plastic surgery. Following the
presentation, you will have a chance to address questions to the current
CDM students actively pursuing training in the field during a panel
discussion. Additionally, the officers from the Admissions and Financial
Aid will be available on site to answer questions about applying to
dental school and financing your education.

The date of the event is Saturday, November 5th, 2011 and the address is
701 West 168th Street, New York, NY 10032 in the Hammer Health Sciences
Center, room 401. The program will last from 08:30am until 3:30pm.
Complimentary lunch will be served. Dress code is business-casual.

Valley Health Network on Saturday, October 1. Please share this

from learning more about our new innovative MD Program.

The University of South Florida College of Medicine is now accepting
applications from prospective medical students for a program jointly
created by USF COM and Lehigh Valley Health Network to prepare physician
leaders committed to accelerating change in health care. The Scholarly
Excellence, Leadership Experiences, Collaborative Learning Program
(SELECT) matriculated its inaugural class in Fall 2011 and is actively
recruiting our second class of future change agents who aspire to
passionately serve patients and transform healthcare in the 21st
century.

SELECT program students will complete a distinctive curriculum
emphasizing leadership development, interprofessional collaboration,
health care quality and safety, and cost management that is integrated
with their medical and clinical science instruction. Across all four
years of the SELECT program, students will be mentored by top medical
faculty from both USF and LHVN and have the opportunity to build the
professional networks needed to drive reform in medicine and health
care.

Students spend their first two years taking classes at the USF campus in
Tampa, FL, and then go to the USF/LVHN campus in Allentown, PA, for two
years of focused clinical education. USF COM is nationally recognized
for its student-centered innovative medical school curriculum, which
encompasses the full spectrum of health. LVHN, known for its quality,
safety and modern team care, received the 2010 University Health System
Consortium Leadership Award for demonstrated excellence in delivering
high quality care.

Internship Description: Looking for motivated self - starter to assist
the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center, housed in the Department of
Health Evidence and Policy at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and
funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention REACH US
Program, on multiple community-based projects. Interns will work with
project staff to:

* Implement the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center and East Harlem
Diabetes Center of Excellence's (NYS Department of Health funded) "Save
Half for Later" campaign, which aims to help customers eat a healthy
portion of food when dining out. This would include promoting the
campaign, engaging restaurants to participate, training and monitoring
restaurant staff on campaign implementation and helping to evaluate the
campaign's success.

* Support planning and communications for Food for Health Business Plan
Competition, which aims to address the lack of affordable, healthy food
choices in underserved communities by inviting MBA students in the
Northeast to propose innovative, market-based, business-oriented
solutions to one of our most pressing public health
needs: healthy, affordable food in underserved communities. Duties
include managing student submissions, event planning, outreach and
scheduling, creating written materials, research and social networking.

* Assist in developing and conducting an evaluation of community-based
organizations participating in the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center
Taskforce. The purpose of the evaluation is to assess how these
organizations' participation in the Taskforce has impacted the work they
do around diabetes and other related health and social issues.

* Assist on other project related tasks as required including, but not
limited to, engaging in community outreach and education, conducting
literature reviews and Internet searches and developing written
materials (i.e. flyers, brochures, presentations, and newsletters).

Educational & Professional Skills: Some college required; Masters level
students or Junior/Senior undergraduates pursuing a public health or
related field degree preferred. Candidates must have excellent oral and
written communication skills, be highly attentive to detail, very
organized and able to work independently. Previous experience conducting
health-related research in community settings, administering surveys,
and developing websites and/or other health education materials strongly
preferred. Strong interpersonal and computer skills (Word, Excel, Power
Point, and Internet) with capacity to conduct research-related tasks
required. Ability to work with a diverse population is essential.

Camp Kesem Columbia

STRIVE Interest Meeting

STRIVE is having an informational meeting for prospective volunteers this Monday (9/19) 6:30-7:30 PM in Room 569 in Lerner and I hope to see you there. If you can't make the meeting, but you are interested in STRIVE it's no problem, just contact one of the Program Coordinators (myself, Dan Reef dkr2109@columbia.edu and Michelle Diop msd2147@columbia.edu) and we'll get in touch with you.

In case you don't know what STRIVE is, here's a quick explanation:

Volunteers in the STRIVE program serve as tutors and mentors for youth with Sickle Cell Disease. Participants in the program come to Columbia once per week for two hours--during the first hour volunteers help participants with areas they are having trouble with in school and during the second hour volunteers teach interactive lessons relating to Sickle Cell Disease. The tutoring component is essential since participants often miss school to spend time in the hospital. If participants can benefit from additional tutoring outside the standard program time, that can be arranged as well. Teaching the participants about their illness and how to manage it leads to drastic improvements in their quality of life. In addition to learning from the volunteers, STRIVE is also a place for youth who have Sickle Cell Disease to share their experiences and learn from each other. Some of this bonding occurs outside of standard programs on our great field trips like the Central Park Zoo, bowling, and basketball games.

Volunteering in the STRIVE program is rewarding for volunteers, as it offers an opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the lives of individuals who have Sickle Cell Disease and to help better their lives. Last year it gave us a great deal of pride to see two of our participants graduate high school and go on to attend college. We saw both of them mature and helped in the process. One of them started out so shy that she would often bury her face in her coat out of embarrassment in ordinary social situations, but by her last year of STRIVE she became confident and social with the other participants. It is a testament to the success of our program and the rewards it offers to both participants and volunteers that almost all participants who attend program stick with it until they graduate from high school and almost all volunteers stay with STRIVE until they graduate from college.

This is an especially exciting time to join STRIVE because of new programs we are initiating. We are currently undertaking a major expansion--in the past we only recruited participants from Columbia University Medical Center, but over the summer we added Harlem Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center. We are also looking to expand the STRIVE program to other colleges and clinical partner hospitals. There are currently four STRIVE sites around the country (we have consistently been told we are the best, but that's no big deal...), all of which are under a nonprofit in Cambridge, Massachusetts called Next Step. This year we will add to that number. But why does this matter to you? STRIVE is a small organization--we keep about a 1:1 ratio of participants:volunteers. Because of this, if you want to be a leader you will have an opportunity to take an active role in our growth.

As I am sure you have realized by this point, STRIVE is a great program and you should join! So come to the meeting or contact us and we'll get you started improving some lives.

Volunteer opportunity for pre-meds: SHOUT

SHOUT (Student Health Outreach), a member of Community Impact, works
with low-income populations to provide access to free and low-cost
health care resources, including Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credit, and
other public assistance. We make weekly visits to soup kitchens and food
pantries, presentations to GED and ESL classes, and conduct health fairs
to enroll people in government assistance programs.

We want dedicated and enthusiastic members willing to accept leadership
positions in the community. No previous volunteer experience is
necessary. A minimum of a 2 hour weekly commitment is required. This is a
great volunteer opportunity for pre-meds and anyone else interested in
public health and health policy.

Health Leads: Community Service Opportunity

An opportunity to serve the New York community and address the social determinants of health:

Health Leads mobilizes undergraduate volunteers, in partnership with providers in urban clinics, to connect low-income patients with the basic resources — such as food, housing, and heating assistance — that they need to be healthy.

Every day in America, doctors prescribe antibiotics to patients who have no food at home or are living in a car.

Of course, medicine alone won’t solve these problems, and many of the patients will return with more serious and expensive illnesses. But, for the most part, doctors don’t have the time or knowledge to address patients’ basic resource needs.

Health Leads solves this problem. With Health Leads, a doctor can “prescribe” food, housing, or other critical resources – just as they would medication. Patients take their prescriptions to the clinic waiting room, where Health Leads’ college volunteers are ready to connect them to these resources.

Health Leads New York has desks in Harlem Hospital and New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Another year of the Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal (CUSJ) has begun!

The CUSJ publishes original undergraduate research articles in any discipline of science or engineering (for example, the paper you might write as part of the SURF/AMGEN summer program or the W3500 Research Class) in its annual publication. The CUSJ also hosts events which bring the spirit of scientific research to Columbia; last fall, the Editor-in-Chief of Cell gave a talk about the professional review process behind the scenes. In the spring semester, CUSJ hosts its annual Symposium which brings together student presenters and professors from New York and nearby states in a large event focused on sharing research and knowledge.

CUSJ is also looking for members to join our Editorial Review Board (ERB), which is responsible for revising the submitted scientific articles so that they can be incorporated into the annual publication. WANT TO LEARN CPR?

Did you know that Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading
causes of death in the United States? Did you also know that
approximately 70% of people who go into cardiac arrest outside of the
hospital do not receive CPR until an ambulance arrives, which can be
upwards of 10 minutes in certain areas of the country? Recent studies
have shown that after 2 minutes without CPR, one's chance of survival
decrease by up to 10% a minute! Do you want to be the one to step up
and give someone CPR in their time of need?

CU CPR is a new student organization that is dedicated to providing
free CPR classes to ANY Columbia affiliate. In a partnership between
the American Heart Association, Columbia Health and Student Affairs,
iCU CPR has many students who are certified to teach you CPR! CU CPR
is the only student run CPR program of this size in the country, and
the American Heart Association is extremely interested in our work.
Help us show that programs like CU CPR are important by becoming
certified!

Columbia University CPR (CU CPR), will be running CPR classes in the
very near future! Due to the overwhelming amount of requests prior to
even opening registration, we will be setting up a system to register
for courses through the TIC system. There is no fee for the courses,
but the suggested donation for the course is $4. If you would like to

This semester we will hold CPR courses with open enrollment 2-3 times
per month. CU CPR encourages you to gather a group of friends on your
floor, your class, your department, or any other way, and request a

ability to book a room you will be asked to do so, but CU CPR will
provide all the necessary AV and teaching materials. LOOK FOR
INFORMATION IN THE NEXT WEEK!

Also, for those of you who would like to join CU CPR, we have openings
for the executive board, instructors and general membership! Within
the next few days an application will be sent out to these listservs,
but if you have a strong interest or any questions you can email

card, please send us an email so we can get your card to you. Due to
changes in our system last year, there was a significant amount of
trouble distributing cards, which will not be the case in the future.

Dental Brigades

Join Columbia´s Dental Brigade to Panama, where we will help bring
access to dentists and dental care to in-need communities. Get
hands-on experience in the field by shadowing licensed dentists as
they perform fluoride treatments, teeth fillings, and teeth
extractions to community members who don´t have access to dental care.
Student volunteers also have the opportunity to teach preventative
dental care workshops to adults and children. Last year´s brigade was
a huge success, as we helped to serve approximately 600 patients over
the course of a week. Join us on our brigade this winter break!
Speaking Spanish is not mandatory and translators will be provided
during brigade.

Dental Brigades is a program of the international nonprofit, Global

Columbia University EMS, will be holding information sessions during the second week of school on:

The executive board of CU-EMS will be present at these sessions to answer any questions you may have regarding the EMT-Basic certification course and corps membership. Attendance to one of these information sessions is mandatory for students who would like to enroll in the certification course or apply for either CU-EMS sponsorship of the course or probationary membership for the Fall 2011 semester.

Columbia University EMS, previously known as CAVA, is planning on holding an EMT-Basic certification course on campus this Spring 2011 for students* at Columbia University or affiliated institutions who are interested becoming New York State certified EMT-Basics.

Columbia University EMS is a student-operated, New York State-certified, Basic Life Support (BLS) Volunteer Ambulance corps. We provide pre-hospital emergency medical care, free of charge, to Columbia University's Morningside Heights Campus, University-owned buildings, and the surrounding area. Our dedicated members provide service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Currently, the corps has approximately 40 active members and responds to over 800 emergency calls per year. We accept new probationary members at the the beginning of every Fall and Spring semesters, and we also work with Emergency Care Programs, Inc. to offer a semester-long EMT-Basic training course on Columbia's Morningside campus to Columbia students.

2 [Course Dates and Times]
- The course will begin on Monday, September 19th and run through Thursday, December 15th. December 15th will be the only Thursday class as that is the pre-determined date of the NY State EMT exam.
- Classes will be held on campus on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.00 p.m. – 10.00 p.m., and on 10 Sundays from 10.30 a.m. – 2.30 p.m..

Full-time students at Columbia University or affiliated institutions have the option of either enrolling as an un-sponsored student or applying for sponsorship of the course.

   - The complete cost for tuition and supplies for the course is $995.00 to be paid in 2-3 installments.

All of those wishing to apply to volunteer with CU-EMS will need to fill out an application and sign up for an interview at the information session. The executive board will be reviewing applications and
conducting interviews during the second weekend of September. Every semester CU-EMS accepts 9 to 11 applicants onto the corps as probationary members. A probationary member becomes a full, active member of CU-EMS upon successful completion of his/her first semester with CU-EMS.

All of those who took the sponsored course through CU-EMS are required to interview to join CU-EMS in the semester following completion of the course. Anyone is eligible to apply to join CU-EMS as long as he/she has an EMT-B or Paramedic license, has a valid U.S. Driver's License, and is a full-time student at Columbia, Barnard, or affiliated institutions.

The annual New England Health Professions Career Fair at Yale University is fast approaching, and you are invited to attend! Present at this fair will be over 50 of the top schools and programs in the country, representing the fields of allopathic and osteopathic medicine, veterinary, dentistry, public health, and nursing (see attached for current list of attendees). The fair also includes MD/PhD programs, Post-baccalaureate and Special Master’s Programs, Diversity Affairs Offices, and Military Scholarship Programs. Each and every student, regardless of class standing, will benefit from this fair:

Freshmen: This fair presents an opportunity for you to obtain materials and to speak with representatives to learn more about the various career options that exist for you. You may already know about being a physician, but do you also have an interest in how health care is affected by poverty? Perhaps, a career in public health is worth exploring. Or perhaps you really enjoy being around animals but aren't quite sure about the range of opportunities that would be available to you as a veterinarian. Here is your chance to find out!

Sophomores: You may be a bit more "settled" into your future career path...then again maybe not (and if that's the case, see above!). You've heard you should have "good extracurriculars" and "direct patient contact" and often ask which courses look "the best" to the admissions committees. The representatives at the fair in general serve on the admissions committees at their schools (and may even be the Dean/Director) and know well what makes an applicant really stand out in the review process. Ask them!

Juniors: You may be gearing up to start the application process next spring, or maybe you're considering taking a year off and are wondering how that will affect your application. Perhaps you are trying to figure out which schools to apply to and where you would be a competitive applicant. Maybe you've already been researching the schools and reading website after website but haven't really been able to get a sense of what is unique about a particular program. Or maybe you're wondering what impact that B- in Orgo lab really is going to have on your application. The representatives at the fair can answer all of these questions for you!

Seniors/Alumni : If you are already in the application process, you really should attend this event! Talking directly to the programs to which you have applied can be invaluable. It is literally impossible to underestimate the value of a little "face-time" in this process!

You don't need us to tell you how competitive the application process is to health professions programs. The schools are not coming here because they need to recruit additional applicants. They are coming because they believe strongly in the quality of your education and have been impressed with the Columbia students who have been through their programs. Prove them right! clincial research opportunity: Critical Care Neurology

STUDENT RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM IN CRITICAL CARE NEUROLOGY -
THE NEW YORK PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL

The goal of the Student Research Internship Program is to provide Columbia students career development opportunities in medical research. Qualified students will be exposed to the basics of medical research through a series of training modules and gain hands-on experience working on current research studies within the Neurology Intensive Care Unit.

All student researchers will be strongly encouraged to participate in the publication process and it is a realistic goal for every student to work towards shared authorship on a poster or paper for a peer-reviewed conference or journal. Advanced students will be encouraged to develop their own projects under the supervision and support of their mentor.

Below is a list of the research opportunities currently available.

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) Outcomes Project

A brain aneurysm is a sac, or bubble, that forms on an artery that supplies blood to the brain. If it ruptures patients begin to hemorrhage in and around their brain tissue, often severely. After aneurysmal rupture, 10% of patients die suddenly before ever receiving medical attention. Of the patients that do reach the emergency department or NICU, from 20% to 30% arrive comatose, of whom half die within 3 months. While these numbers are grim, research in the last twenty years has led to a much better understanding of this disease and has led to new treatment models and interventions that have greatly improved the long-term outcome of patients who survive an aneurysmal hemorrhage.

The subarachnoid hemorrhage outcomes project is an ongoing epidemiological study that has enrolled 700+ SAH patients over the last 8 years. A medical profile is constructed for each enrolled patient which involves interviewing the patient or family about their past medical history, documenting procedures, complications, radiology, and physiological status during their hospital stay, and following up with patients at 3 and 12 months to assess their current level of functioning and quality-of-life. This invaluable data allows us to address questions regarding SAH etiology and course, as well as evaluate the impact of existing and new therapeutics on outcome. Over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles have been produced from this study.

Premedical and medical students that can devote 8 hours a week for a minimum of 1 year are encouraged to apply for this opportunity. Currently we are accepting 8 students.

Neuro-ICU Continuous Multimodal Monitoring Project (NICU CMMP)

Continuous cardiopulmonary and physiological monitoring has become standard clinical practice when treating patients in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit. These measurements are used to assess the status of a specific process and are typically evaluated in isolation. Only recently has the computing capacity existed to begin to evaluate the relationships between physiological processes which enable treating physicians to get a much clearer picture of patient status.

The goals of the Neuro-ICU Continuous Multimodal Monitoring Project are two fold. First is to develop software tools to display and analyze available data in real-time. Secondly, to use data mining techniques to unravel the relationships that govern healthy brain function and to construct statistical models that can be used to predict future patient status that can be used to inform clinical decisions.

This is a great opportunity for premedical and medical students that have an interest in bioinformatics, bioengineering, and/or statistics. Students that can devote 8 hours a week for a minimum of 1 year are encouraged to apply for this opportunity. Currently we are accepting 2 students.

We are pleased to announce the St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Language Services Fall 2011 Volunteer Interpreting Training.

VOLUNTEER MEDICAL INTERPRETING TRAINING

As a medical interpreter you can make a difference!

The Language Services Department at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center

has developed a two day training program to enable participants to acquire basic interpretation skills in the medical

setting. Trained volunteer interpreters assist providers to meet the health care needs of our culturally diverse patients.

A trained medical interpreter contributes to better health outcomes, better communication between provider and Limited

English Proficiency (LEP) patients, increased clinician and patient satisfaction, and reduced legal risks. This

program meets the requirements of the New York Department of Health and adheres to federal mandates and guidelines on

cultural and linguistic appropriate health care.

The training will take place at St. Luke's Hospital on Saturday October 8 and Saturday October 15, both days from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Enrollment deadline is Friday, September 23^rd and is open to all Columbia University students.

Research Opportunity in Molecular Motors

Professor Jung-Chi Liao's Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Columbia University is working on the field molecular motors. These nanoscale protein machines are used by cells to carry out diverse functions by converting chemical energy into mechanical work. There are rotary motors, walking motors, DNA moving motors, and many others, all in the scale of about 10 nm.

Our lab is interested in the functional properties of molecular motors. Specifically, we are investigating the mechanism by which chemical energy is converted to mechanical work. We are looking for bright and motivated students for the molecular biology aspect of this research. Prior experience in molecular biology techniques including primer design, PCR, molecular cloning, and gel electrophoresis is strongly encouraged. Research credits may be arranged.

Professor Jung-Chi Liao’s Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Columbia University is working on the new burgeoning field of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). iPSC reprogramming has advanced stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, and has demonstrated tremendous potential in disease modeling, cell therapy, and drug discovery. The ability to reprogram any adult somatic cells back into stem cells using the addition of only four genes opens the doors for many exciting therapeutic applications. This method allows the generation of patient-specific stem cells that can be differentiated into all cell types, while avoiding the controversial ethical issues surrounding embryonic stem cells.

Our lab is interested in studying the molecular pathways involved in this process of reprogramming. We aim to identify important transcription factors and signaling pathways crucial to the process to help better understand the specifics of reprogramming and to better control it for clinical use. We are looking for bright and motivated students for the reprogramming research. Research credits may be arranged.

The Lang Youth Medical program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital -- a medical pipeline / youth development initiative for young adults from the Washington Heights and Inwood communities -- is looking for talented individuals who are excited about working with middle and high school students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. The goal of the Program is to help Lang Scholars realize their academic and career aspirations, especially in the health sciences.

During the academic year program, Lang Scholars participate in grade-specific programming made up curricula in basic sciences, public health, literacy, and college application counseling. (Details on our curriculum can be found in the attached job description.) The Advisor position is that of a teacher and a mentor. You will guide and supervise Lang Scholars through many academic and social experiences, making sure they are intellectually engaged and growing as students, scientists, and professionals at all stages of the Program. Advising is a lot of work, requiring much dedication and creativity, but it is also an extremely rewarding experience.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in working with youth and teaching science, public health, or literacy. OVERVIEW OF POSITION:

The Academic Associate program is a clinical research assistant program

in the Emergency Department of the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center.

Students may choose to volunteer at either location (St. Luke's: 114th

and Amsterdam or Roosevelt: 10th Avenue between 57th and 59th Streets).

Your primary responsibility will be to ongoing research projects being conducted in the department in an effort to improve emergency care, to bring greater precision to the practice of emergency medicine (EM), and to improve the quality of care. Each of these projects focuses on a different aspect of patient care, and they include clinical trials on medications, patient and physician survey studies, observational cohort studies, practice-pattern studies, and ultimately many more. Opportunities for high-level involvement in specific research projects are available to motivated, reliable, interested individuals in addition to baseline commitment. Observation of emergency department procedures, resuscitations, and general care is an integrated part of the experience, and in some cases required for execution of research enrollment. All AAs will have the opportunity to shadow a resident on a couple of their shifts.

There is no pay for the AA position. However, the directors of theprogram, Dr. Joshua Quaas and Dr. Tod Bania expect and plan to write letters in support of AAs who spend time and effort on the program for endeavors that you are pursuing (i.e. medical school or health-related fields, etc.) It is an extremely enriching experience for you, both in terms of the research experience you gain, and also in the exposure to modern medicine that you enjoy. The ED is the place where illnesses of every single type and variety end up eventually. There is no illness that we do not see in the ED, and we see patients at all points of the spectrum in terms of severity. You will also gain invaluable research experience and hands-on clinical involvement in research. This is not bench research, so your experience will be clinically oriented.

COMMITMENT:

We ask for 2 shifts per week from each AA, and also request your attendance at a few evening training sessions each semester. The shifts for Fall 2011 run from Monday, September 19^th 2011 to Sunday, December 11^th 2011(inclusive). Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., is director of the National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of
Health. Since his appointment as NIAID director in 1984, Dr. Fauci has
overseen an extensive research portfolio devoted to preventing,
diagnosing, and treating infectious and immune-mediated diseases. Dr.
Fauci also is chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation, where
he has made numerous important discoveries related to HIV/AIDS and is
one of the most-cited scientists in the field. Dr. Fauci, a member of
the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, has received numerous awards
for his scientific accomplishments, including the National Medal of
Science, the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service, and the
Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has been awarded 36 honorary
doctoral degrees and is the author, coauthor, or editor of more than
1,100 scientific publications, including several major textbooks.

The Hertog Global Strategy Initiative is a research program in the
Department of History that employs historical analysis to confront
present and future problems in world politics. Each summer, invited
experts and select students gather at Columbia University for twelve
weeks of intensive study, independent research, and collaborative
writing on a critical issue in international affairs. The 2011 topic
is: "The History and Future of Pandemic Threats and Global Public
Health." Students in the program spend the first two weeks of the
summer in an intensive seminar and the following eight weeks
conducting independent and group research projects. In August, the
class reconvenes and participants present their research and
participate in group exercises. The program demonstrates the potential
for collaborative historical research on key problems in world
politics. The 2011 program is being co-taught by Matthew Connelly,
Professor of History at Columbia University, and Stephen Morse,
Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Columbia's Mailman School of
Public Health. The program has been made possible by a gift from the

The Center for the History and Ethics of Public Health is a group in

Fall Volunteer opportunity at Mount Sinai for prehealth

The Brain Injury Research Center of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City is a nationally and internationally known center conducting research to improve the lives of people with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Brain Injury Research Center has been continually funded since 1987 by the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Under current funding, our research program includes:

· A group treatment program that provides people with TBI ways to deal with the cognitive and emotional challenges they face in day-to-day life.

· A program of aerobic exercise on a treadmill to produce benefits such as reduced depression and better cognitive skills.

· A study of sleep and fatigue.

· A project to produce a better tool for identifying TBI in people who have experienced a brain injury but are unaware that TBI is the probably cause of the long-term symptoms they experience.

Volunteers will spend about half of the time in an office environment scoring psychological testing measures and conducting data entry. The remaining time will be spent shadowing clinicians and attending presentations and grand rounds of their choosing within the medical center.

Laurie Garrett has been a senior fellow for global health at the
Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York since 2004. Ms. Garrett
is the only writer ever to have been awarded all three of the Big "Ps"
of journalism: the Peabody, the Polk, and the Pulitzer. Her expertise
includes global health systems, chronic and infectious diseases, and
bioterrorism.

Ms. Garrett is the best-selling author of The Coming Plague: Newly
Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance (Farrar, Straus, and
Giroux, 1994) and Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public
Health (Hyperion Press, 2000). Over the years, she has also
contributed chapters to numerous books, including AIDS in the World
(Oxford University Press, 1993), edited by Jonathan Mann, Daniel
Tarantola, and Thomas Netter, and Disease in Evolution: Global
Changes and Emergence of Infectious Diseases (New York Academy of
Sciences, 1994), edited by Mary E. Wilson.

She graduated with honors in biology from the University of
California, Santa Cruz. She attended graduate school in the Department
of Bacteriology and Immunology at University of California, Berkeley,
and did laboratory research at Stanford University with Dr. Leonard
Herzenberg. During her PhD studies, she started reporting on science
news at KPFA, a local radio station. The hobby soon became far more
interesting than graduate school, and she took a leave of absence to
explore journalism. At KPFA, Ms. Garrett worked on a documentary,
coproduced with Adi Gevins, that won the 1977 George Foster Peabody
Award.

After leaving KPFA, Ms. Garrett worked briefly in the California
Department of Food and Agriculture, assessing the human health impacts
of pesticide use. She then went overseas, living and working in
southern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, freelance reporting for
Pacifica Radio, Pacific News Service, BBC Radio, Reuters, Associated
Press, and others. In 1980, she joined National Public Radio, working
out of the network's San Francisco and, later, Los Angeles bureaus as
a science correspondent. During her NPR years, Ms. Garrett received
awards from the National Press Club (Best Consumer Journalism, 1982),
the San Francisco Media Alliance (Meritorious Achievement Award in
Radio, 1983), and the World Hunger Alliance (First Prize, Radio, 1987).

In 1988, Ms. Garrett left NPR to join the science writing staff of
Newsday. Her Newsday reporting has earned several awards, including
the Newsday Publisher's Award (Best Beat Reporter, 1990), Award of
Excellence from the National Association of Black Journalists (for
"AIDS in Africa," 1989), Deadline Club of New York (Best Beat
Reporter, 1993), First Place from the Society of Silurians (for
"Breast Cancer," 1994), and the Bob Considine Award of the Overseas
Press Club of America (for "AIDS in India," 1995). She has also
written for many publications, including Foreign Affairs, Esquire,
Vanity Fair, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and Current
Issues in Public Health. She has appeared frequently on national
television programs, including ABC's Nightline, The NewsHour with Jim
Lehrer, The Charlie Rose Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dateline, The
International Hour (CNN), and Talkback (CNN).

Ms. Garrett is a member of the National Association of Science Writers
and served as the organization's president during the mid-1990s. She
lives in Brooklyn Heights, New York.

The Center for the History and Ethics of Public Health is a group in
Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health?s Department of
Sociomedical Sciences where students and faculty rely on historical
methods and ethical analysis to investigate critical and complex
public health issues. The idea behind the Center's research and
teaching activities is to confront the challenges facing public health
by understanding their ethical dimensions and political, social,
cultural, and economic roots. At the Center,
ethical questions inspire historical research, which in turn helps
reframe contemporary choices and policy options. In addition to
undertaking historical inquiry, the Center has been vital in
developing the field of public health ethics. While bioethics has
stressed the importance of protecting individual patients and research
subjects, public health ethics has made protecting populations a
priority. The Center boasts a faculty who have pioneered a new way of
thinking about ethics and population health. The Center?s faculty is
also committed to training the next generation of engaged scholars.

Based at Columbia University in the City of New York, The Journal of Global Health is a student-run, international publication that seeks to propose innovative solutions to global health problems.

Our inaugural, Spring 2011 issue of JGH features the work of undergraduate and graduate students at over twelve different institutions in six countries, and it can be found at www.ghjournal.org/current-issue/

"Global Health is Local"

Disease outbreaks and the major health problems of the future often have no boundaries, and all public health is arguably local in scope. Despite the moniker "global health," all medical care is ultimately patient-centered.

While we welcome the submission of ALL papers that address behavioral, biological, environmental, political, or socioeconomic factors that affect the health of populations and individuals, the Fall 2011 JGH issue's spotlight will be on community health.

We are especially interested in manuscripts that identify ways to improve public health at the community level. Topics include: environmental health, infectious and chronic disease, health care disparities, risk factors for disease incidence, health literacy, disease surveillance, interventions to promote healthy lifestyles, and health psychology.

Until September 30, 2011, we will be accepting:

The candidate will be involved in tissue culture, preparation and analysis of samples for flow cytometry and cell sorting and molecular biology and biochemical techniques such as cloning of DNA into plasmid vectors, RNA and cDNA preparation, and immunostaining. REQUIREMENTS: College graduate with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and one year of laboratory experience. A commitment of two years is required.

•Lead development, with guidance of physicians, in innovative service delivery models and processes to support needs of the patient population served.

•Coordinates implementation of decision support tools (clinical guides and protocols) to support clinical team members in improving outcomes.

•Lead development of a resource library for patients with diabetes, hypertension, hepatitis C, and asthma.

Principal Investigator: Martha G. Welch, MD. Depts of Psychiatry and Pathology

Overview: An internship position is available in Developmental Neuroscience at the Columbia University Medical Center under the supervision of Dr. Martha Welch, co-director of the BrainGut Initiative in Departments of Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Pathology and Cell Biology.

The BrainGut Initiative (BGI) is an integrated clinical and basic research and treatment unit that focuses on the mechanisms of high nurture and developing a new generation of biologically-based behavioral and/or neuropeptide therapies that provide families with effective treatment strategies while aiming to prevent childhood developmental and inflammatory disorders. Our multidisciplinary lab is at work on a variety of projects which include: a clinical study in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Columbia University Children’s Hospital of NY; basic research investigating the effects of the hormones of maternal nurture secretin and oxytocin on gut inflammation; and establishing the framework for clinical trials. We have had 10 interns in the past year, all of whom have stayed longer than expected.

Looking for: We are looking for a current undergraduate student or college graduate interested in research and/or the field of medicine. The individual will have the opportunity to work closely with a variety of collaborators. He or she will have the opportunity to be trained in infant EEG, lab techniques, grant writing, data collection, entry and analysis. This position will offer clinical and/or lab, as well as life skills.

A psychology, biology, biochemistry, pre-medical, related background is preferred. The applicant must have good time management and self-starting skills, attention to detail and be able to commit at least 8 hours a week during the entire academic year. There is a possibility for the candidate to start work during the summer. Availability to work on Mondays during the fall 2011 semester is preferable.

This is a terrific opportunity for anyone who is interested in research, would like exposure to an active multidisciplinary research environment, and who would like mentorship and recommendation letters for graduate school (medical or otherwise), and the possibility of poster presentation.

Two graduate students from Columbia’s Master of Science in Narrative Medicine program will be conducting a FREE Summer Narrative Medicine Seminar for you!

What is Narrative Medicine?

Narrative Medicine is an emerging interdisciplinary field that examines the illness experience through stories of patients, doctors, and other medical professionals and caregivers. By studying stories and representations of illness, health care providers can gain a more holistic perspective that integrates the physical, emotional, and social impacts of being ill. Students of such stories develop the acumen not only to examine various narrative texts but also to better evaluate and treat their patients.

What will you do in this seminar?

You will build your interpretive and communication skills through close reading and listening in different media, discussion, and reflective writing. These skills will allow you, as rising medical professionals, to form a more complete perspective of the impact of illness on the lives of individuals. We will study personal narratives, popular news, photographs, literature, and academic theory from a variety of diverse sources in a dynamic small-group seminar.

When: The workshop will consist of six weekly sessions on Tuesdays from 11am-12:30pm, June 7-July 19 (excluding June 21). Seminar will take place on Columbia’s main campus.

Hepatitis C Patient Navigator and Outreach Worker Job Description

The Hepatitis C Outreach Worker and Patient Navigator and works within Mount Sinai’s Primary Care Based Hepatitis C program, the “Hepatitis Education and Liver Screening Program” (HEALS).

The Patient Navigator’s role is to assist patients in navigating the medical system to complete medical evaluation for and initiate hepatitis C treatment. The Navigator reinforces hepatitis C medical education with the patients and provides social support. As the program is located on the edge of Harlem, a Spanish speaking candidate is required to communicate with our patients. The Navigator attends and schedules clinic visits with the patients and assists the providers with tracking the patients.

The Navigator serves a unique and essential role in the clinic and also assists with all HEALS community outreach activities. Outreach activities include educational presentations, hepatitis C testing (including pre and post test counseling), and facilitating appointments in the clinic for those who test positive. Also, participate in Harlem HCV Task Force Activities.

This is a grant funded position.

Specific responsibilities are below:

Position Description

Patient Navigator:

Attend the Hepatitis C (HCV) patients clinic visits during two clinic sessions with patients.

Provide support for patients and address their questions and concerns;

· Clarify information and answer questions regarding disease pathology, treatment evaluation, eligibility for treatment, psychiatric consultations, managing co-morbidities, and hepatitis C treatment.

· Assist patients on hepatitis C treatment by providing support for patients while on hepatitis C treatment, by providing assistance in managing side effects or other problems.

Assist clinicians and medical residents;

· Update clinician on all new developments concerning patient

· Translate for Spanish speaking patients

· Assist clinicians in ordering all referrals

· Order patient’s hepatitis C medication and request new prescriptions from the providers

Follow-up to clinic visits, including scheduling all appointments and follow-up on clinician referrals;

· Schedule work-up procedures (ultrasounds, biopsies, etc)

· Obtain prior approval for procedures from patients’ insurance providers

· Assist patients with application for pharmaceutical company patient assistance programs

· Call patients to remind them about appointments

· Update the Hepatitis C patient database, track patient follow-up, run queries, assist with reports

· Assist patients with other activities to decrease barriers to care

Provide feedback to HCV team during weekly meetings

Assist with research activities (literature review, recruitment, consenting patients, conducting interviews, providing follow-up to Project Manager, etc)

Attend Patient Navigator training

Outreach Worker:

Planning;

· Identify businesses and community based organizations in East Harlem for screening and educational activities and help coordinate events and activities with community partners

· Create and/or order outreach materials to give to community members

· Assist with Biopsy Buddies program planning and implementation (peer program)

Screening and Blood tests;

· Administer risk factor questionnaires.

· Pre and post test counseling including intake for Department of Health

· Conduct hepatitis C rapid tests

· Option for phlebotomy training to conduct hepatitis C confirmatory blood tests (not required)

· Attend scheduled health fairs

· Make appointments for tests and results

· Coordinate with DOH (supplies, data entry, lab)

Program Goals;

· Attend team meetings and present data

· Assist with general program reports and grant applications

· Attend Harlem HCV Task Force and community meetings

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree required
Spanish speaking
Exceptionally organized and able to work independently
Excellent communication skills
Compassionate and personable
Willing to work in the field with community members
2 year commitment desired
Interested in health disparities programming and research

Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, Research: The Division of General Internal Medicine is the largest division in the Department of Medicine and has a cadre of experienced grants managers, project managers, research nurses, recruiter/interviewers, and research assistants. Areas of research focus in the Division include chronic disease epidemiology and management, health services research, outcomes research, quality of care, health disparities, study of health beliefs and behaviors, cancer screening and treatment among minorities, clinical prediction rules, and doctor-patient communication.

Internship Description: Looking for motivated self - starters to assist on multiple state and federally funded, community-based projects/research studies housed in the Department of Health Evidence and Policy at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Interns will work with investigators and project staff to:

Conduct outreach to NYC community health centers and other health care organizations that provide community-based diabetes screening to engage them in utilizing a bilingual screening tool that has been developed to allow screeners to present accurate, actionable results to people. This project is under the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center, a CDC funded REACH U.S. program to eliminate health disparities.

Assist in developing and conducting an evaluation of community-based organizations participating in the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center Taskforce. The purpose of the evaluation is to assess how these organizations’ participation in the Taskforce has impacted the work they do around diabetes and other related health and social issues.

Support the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center and East Harlem Diabetes Center of Excellence’s (NYS Department of Health funded) “Save Half for Later” campaign, which aims to help customers eat a healthy portion of food when dining out. This would include promoting the campaign, engaging restaurants to participate, training restaurant staff on campaign implementation and helping to evaluate the campaign’s success.

Assist on other project related tasks as required including, but not limited to, engaging in community outreach and education, conducting literature reviews and Internet searches and developing written materials (i.e. flyers, brochures, presentations, and newsletters).

Educational & Professional Skills: Some college required; Junior/Senior undergraduates or recent graduates with an interest in pursuing a medical, public health or related field degree preferred. Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills, be highly attentive to detail, very organized and able to work independently. Previous experience conducting health-related research in community settings, administering surveys, and developing websites and/or other health education materials strongly preferred. Strong interpersonal and computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Internet) with capacity to conduct research-related tasks required. Ability to work with a diverse population is essential.
