Community Service Opp: Teaching Youth in Prison, Join CLAP

Community Service volunteer opportunity:

-----

Did you know a third of all detained youth read below the fourth grade level? Would you like to teach and mentor teens in the Juvenile Justice System?

The Columbia Literacy Advocacy Project (CLAP) is a new initiative that helps youth in detention who are below grade level in reading and math. Research has proven that routine tutoring sessions, in addition to standard schooling, can have a significant impact on the academic performance of this overlooked, under-served group.

We are looking for Columbia students to mentor and tutor detained youth at the Horizon and Crossroads Juvenile Centers. Tutors will lead dynamic and engaging study sessions to help their students perform better on NY State Regents exams. We are looking for tutors in the sciences, maths, English, history, and foreign languages. Tutoring sessions take place from 3-5pm, and will begin May 16, the week after final exams, and last until mid-June. CLAP will then resume in the fall. We are also looking for students interested in taking on leadership positions with CLAP!

If you are interested in joining, please email Thomas Sun and Salomeya Sobko at ts2433@columbia.edu and ss3743@columbia.edu.

The Hippocratic Oath says, "above all, do no harm." Yet where is beneficence if the physician deprives a condemned man of compassionate care at the end of life?

Ruth Fischbach, Ph.D., M.P.E., is Professor of Bioethics and Co-founder and Director of the Columbia University Center for Bioethics. She is a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and also in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health. Prior to arriving at Columbia, Dr. Fischbach served from 1998 to 2001 as Senior Advisor for Biomedical Ethics in the Office of the Director of Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health where she was committed to protecting the rights and promoting the welfare of research participants. While on the faculty at Harvard Medical School (1990-98), she developed and directed for 8 years theProgram in the Practice of Scientific Investigation, the federally mandated program in the Responsible Conduct of Research as well as a course on Domestic Violence. Completing her post-doctoral fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology, she also developed the Humanities in Medicine Program while at Washington University (1983-1990).  Her teaching, IRB, and Ethics Committee experience is extensive. Research interests and scholarly publications have focused on decisions around the end of life, communication between patients and healthcare professionals, and experiences of researchers and research participants, particularly as they relate to informed consent, privacy, conflicts of interest, and other aspects of responsible conduct of research.  Current work focuses on research ethics and contemporary issues in bioethics such as neuroethics and implications of stem cell technologies.

Summer Opportunity: Volunteer Clinical Research VA Hospital

Summer VOLUNTEER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

Our multidisciplinary research team has positions available for summer interns. We are looking for

highly responsible, organized psychology major or pre-med students who are interested in pursuing

careers in medicine, psychology, or clinical research.

The individual would be responsible for assisting in recruitment and data management in ongoing

externally funded research studies evaluating different behavioral approaches to improve cardiovascular

risk factor control. The intern would also participate in organization of study materials, administrative

duties, and literature searches. The individual will have opportunities to aid in patient recruitment and

to observe patient interviews. As part of the position, the intern will be involved in academic

deliberations involving a multidisciplinary group that includes individuals with expertise in medicine,

psychology, epidemiology, statistics, health education, economics, etc. The interns are able to join in

conducting the research, and in preparing for presentation and publication. As such, the intern can

expect to be named as coauthors on any material to which they make a substantial contribution. For

example, at the NYU Department of Medicine Research Day in May 2010, four of last year’s interns

presented abstracts at the meeting. They have also been coauthors of abstracts at large national

meetings.

The applicant must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate in college or a postbaccalaureate

student, and should be pursuing a psychology major, nutrition major, pre-med

concentration, or something of a similar nature. Research experience and completion of a Research

Methods or Statistics course are preferred, but not necessary. The position requires that the applicant

be available for at least 20 hours a week during business hours over the summer, negotiable depending

on their availability and our need. Interns are also highly encouraged to continue into the fall semester

for at least 10 hours a week during business hours. The position, which is an unpaid position at the VA

Medical Center, would start in May or early June. This is an excellent research opportunity for students

planning on applying to medical school or graduate programs in psychology.

To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to Lily Mundy at lily.mundy@va.gov. Priority will be

given to applicants who submit by April 8, 2011.
