FW: Penn Med "A Day with Penn Minority Medical Students"

Due to the overwhelming success of our program "A Day with Penn Minority Medical Students" last semester; the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Community Outreach will host it again on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The program is planned by the Latino Medical Student Association and the Student National Medical Association and is especially designed for undergraduate students who have declared an interest in medicine for their future career. Our goal is to provide the students with the opportunity to learn about Penn Med, its educational programs and student life and to augment the outstanding guidance and counsel which they already receive from their pre-health advisors.

A program agenda is attached and students can register on-line, free of charge, at the following website: http://www.cu2000.med.upenn.edu/hps/penndayregistration.asp. Registration will open at 9:00am on Tuesday, March 1st. The deadline for registration is Monday, March 21 and is limited to 125 registrants. A flyer announcing the program is attached as well. Please publicize our program to your students so that they may benefit from this interactive experience.

We look forward to seeing your students at Penn Med!

Info Session: Premedical Narrative Medicine Seminar

Join the Spring 2011 Premedical Narrative Medicine Seminar

Two graduate students from Columbia University’s Narrative Medicine MS program will be conducting a 6-SESSION, NON-CREDIT, FREE workshop in Narrative Medicine.  We will focus on close reading, discussion, and reflective and creative writing to build communication and interpretive skills.  These skills help to enrich the clinical encounter, enabling clinicians to better understand the broad impact of illness on the lives of individuals.

Narrative Medicine is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to access and interpret the illness experience through stories.  Using the narrative framework of attention, representation, and affiliation, providers can better integrate the physical, emotional, and social impacts of illness, with the goal of providing their patients with the most personalized care.  The Narrative Medicine Program coaches students to be more perceptive as they give and receive accounts of self.

We will study creative nonfiction, short stories, poetry, philosophical theories, and literary criticism in a dynamic small-group seminar.

When: The workshop will consist of six ninety-minute sessions

                Monday evenings:  March 7, 21, 28 and April 4, 11 and 25th

                Exact time to be determined

Who should apply: Undergraduate premedical students interested in writing and the humanities.

For more information:

Please come to our Information Session this Wednesday Feb 23rd  at 7 pm in 624 Kent Hall

To apply:  Please send a letter of interest including your name, college, class year, academic major or concentration and reasons for wanting to join the seminar.  Please send to preprofessional@columbia.edu by [Date]

Mark Kissler graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in chemical engineering.  He enjoyed studying humanities alongside his other coursework, and also participated in a weekly short story reading group.  He is thrilled to be a part of the Narrative Medicine program and is especially looking forward to the chance to work with interested students on narrative and close reading skills.  He plans to continue on to medical school in the fall.

Jocelyn Jiao graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology and a minor in Creative Writing. She is an avid musician, painter, and writer, and as a result, has always sought the palpable intersection between the arts and medicine. Like Mark, she is thrilled to engage with undergraduates interested in Narrative Medicine and plans to attend medical school in the fall.

summer opportunity: intership at Rooevelt Hospital

Summer 2011 Research Internship: Volunteer Opportunity in Cardiology Lab

An opportunity for anyone considering a career in medicine, medical research or health care.

You will work closely with a prominent Cardiology researcher and clinician in the fields of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopothy (HCM) and Echocardiography.  HCM causes thickening of the heart muscle in the left ventricle, and is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 30, especially athletes.  It occurs in 1 of every 500 people. It is most important as a cause of disability and death in patients of all ages. Echocardiography is a non-invasive method of examining cardiac anatomy and function. It is a very useful diagnostic tool for clinical care.

Description:  As a Research Assistant, you would work in a busy HCM department with a leading cardiologist, his research nurse and other medical professionals in the department.  Your duties will include helping us to accumulate an annual follow-up of our 500 HCM patients, working on an annual newsletter and yearly Program report.  You will observe EKGs, echocardiograms, cardiac catheterizations and other medical procedures.  The experience can be adjusted to suit the needs of the Research Assistant.  You will receive sufficient experience to help you decide if health care or medical research is a suitable career for you.  You will have the opportunity to observe patient care in busy outpatient Cardiology practice. We have hosted a summer intern for several years, and our students have uniformly given us positive feedback.

Requirements: You need not have any medical experience, but you must have basic computer skills - Excel and Word, and ability to work well with people.

Specifics: There is no pecuniary compensation for this position.  We offer great experience and expertise.  The position requires volunteering for around 10-15 hours weekly for 6-8 weeks.  Only one position is available, so please apply early.
