Currently, Columbia is offering 7 brigades:  Medical, Dental, Water, Public Health, Environmental, Business, & Microfinance. These brigades are split between Honduras and Panama and we travel down the last week of winter break, or January 7 - 15, 2011.

Anyone who wants to go on our brigade this January (in any of the many disciplines offered) must fill out an application and get it back to us at cugb.applications@gmail.com by THIS FRIDAY, 1 OCTOBER by 11:59 p.m. The application seems long, but please read all instructions very closely. Additionally, we will hold an informal question/answer session with the board Tuesday, September 28th from 8-9 p.m. in Lerner West Ramp Lounge. Please don't hesitate to ask us anything about the application process or individual brigades at this time. If you cannot make it, feel free to email cugb_board@columbia.edu.

You will be notified of your brigade status by Sunday, October 3rd at our first FULL BRIGADE BODY MEETING from 8-10 p.m. (Location TBA). All applicants must attend this meeting. We know this application and decision process comes early in the year, but in order to get cheaper airfare we must get a full headcount and deposit in as early as possible.

Good luck with the application!

Thank you so much for your help!

Best,
Wen

recruiting research participants

Dear Student:

As a Columbia University student enrolled in a pre-med course, you  are
invited to take part in a new study about exam preparation that  is
being conducted in the Psychology Department by Professor Niall  Bolger.
The research is designed to find out about the daily  experiences of
undergraduates who are preparing for challenging  exams and it is funded
by the National Institutes of Health.

As a participant, you would be asked to complete daily diaries for  two
weeks surrounding an important exam, each of which will take no  longer
than 10 minutes to complete. You will be asked to answer  questions
about your mood, food and beverage consumption, and the  various ways
you cope on a daily basis. Some participants will be  asked to provide
saliva samples to obtain a physiological measure  of arousal. All
responses and test results will be kept  confidential, the study is
entirely voluntary and as a participant,  you would be allowed to
withdraw at any time. The questions are all  online and can be answered
at your convenience. You would be paid  for your participation.

Depending on what condition of our study you are asked to join, you
will receive $50. You will also have multiple chances to win bonus
awards worth $250 each. Your participation gives you a chance to be
part of a Columbia University study and is a great way to receive a  bit
of money as well!

If you are interested in participating, please visit our website to
sign up at http://www.psych.nyu.edu/couples/EP/signup

For more information about this study, please contact us by email  at

Best of luck to you with the semester ahead!

Event: Duke-NUS Medical School Visit

DUKE-NUS (National University of Singapore) Medical School Visit

Date:

September 27, 2010 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm EDT

Location:

Uris 306

Contact:

For further information regarding this event, please contact Jen Thompson by sending email to jmt2167@columbia.edu .

Students are welcome to come meet with Samuel Ang Li-Hsien from Duke- NUS Graduate Medical School located in Singapore.

The focus of Duke-NUS is to help develop the next generation of physician-scientists.   Our school is a joint collaboration between Duke University and the National University of Singapore(NUS).   Duke-NUS employs the curriculum developed at the Duke University School of Medicine. This unique curriculum includes a full year devoted to independent research and is well known for its leadership in training physician-scientists.

We have students coming  from a variety academic experiences, from the traditional pre-med tract to engineering, life sciences, pharmacology and even anthropology, to name a few.

Although open to all students, our school is  targeting outstanding international students from Asia who, because of US citizenship requirements, may find it difficult to gain admission to most US med schools.  We think they will be further excited with the career and research opportunities that Singapore can offer, given Singapores commitment to being a leading biomedical hub in Asia.
