Attention to those interested in becoming an EMT-Basic or joining CU-EMS this semester:

[Info Sessions]

Columbia University EMS, will be holding 2 information sessions during the first week of school on Wednesday, September 8 and Thursday, September 9 (exact location TBA).

The executive board of CU-EMS will be present at these sessions to answer any questions you may have regarding the EMT-Basic certification course and corps membership. Attendance to one of these information sessions is mandatory for students who would like to enroll in the certification course or apply for either CU-EMS sponsorship of the course or probationary membership for the Fall 2010 Semester.

[Applications]
Applications for both the EMT-Basic Course Sponsorship and Probationary Membership can be found on our website [www.cuems.org]. Please make sure you meet all requirements before filling out an application.

Applications will be accepted beginning on Saturday, September 4th. You can turn in completed applications to the door of the CU-EMS office in the basement of Carman or at either of the two information sessions. Please do not e-mail applications, as they will not be considered.

All applications will be due by 10:00PM Thursday, September 9th.

Remember that if you turn in your application to the door of the CU-EMS office, you still must attend one of the information sessions in order to sign up for an interview. Failure to do so will result in your application being discarded.

[Interviews]
Both students applying for sponsorship and probationary membership will be signing up for interviews during the information sessions. The interviews will be held on Friday and Saturday (Sept 10 & 11). There will be a second stage interview for a selected number of probationary membership applicants held on Sunday (Sept 12).

All applicants will be notified of their status by the evening of Sunday, September 12.

1 [Corps Overview]
2 [EMT-Basic Course]
3 [Course Sponsorship and Eligibility]
4 [Probationary Membership]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 [Corps Overview]

Columbia University EMS is a student-operated, New York State-certified, Basic Life Support (BLS) volunteer ambulance corps that provides pre-hospital emergency medical care, free of charge, to Columbia University's Morningside Heights Campus, surrounding University-owned buildings and the surrounding area 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The corps has approximately 45 active members and responds to over 700 emergency calls per year.

2 [EMT-Basic Course]

Columbia University EMS works closely with Emergency Care Programs, Inc, a third-party training company located in Brooklyn, to provide an EMT-Basic Training Course on Columbia University's Morningside campus. Upon obtaining certification, you will be licensed to work for any other EMT agencies in New York State as well as Columbia University EMS.

The course costs $995.00 and is open to everyone, full-time students or not. If you wish to take the course at a reduced cost, read the section on [Course Sponsorship] below. If you do not meet the requirements for sponsorship or do not wish to apply for sponsorship but still want to enroll in the class, e-mail Laura Trujillo (let2109@columbia.edu) with your name, affiliation, and phone number.

Classes this semester will begin on Monday, September 13th and run until Wednesday, December 8th. New York State Written Exam will take place on Thursday, December 16th. The classes run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6pm-10pm, and 5 Sundays from 9am-5:30pm (see schedule attached).

3 [Course Sponsorship]
Only full-time students at Columbia or an affiliated institution are eligible to apply for CU-EMS sponsorship of the EMT-Basic course. For those students who receive sponsorship, the EMT-Basic certification course will be provided at a drastically reduced price (no more than $225 for the entire course). Exact details regarding cost for sponsored students are still being finalized, but more information will be available in the next week.

The executive board will be reviewing applications and interviewing applicants during the first week of school. About 10-15 selected students will be granted sponsorship each semester. Applicants will be notified of their sponsorship status no later than Sunday, September 12th.

In order to qualify for course sponsorship for the Fall 2010 semester, you must:

1) be a full-time student at Columbia University, Barnard, or one of its affiliate institutions,
2) complete the necessary hours and assignments to successfully meet course requirements as directed by Emergency Care Programs, Inc.
3) pass both the New York State EMT-B Written Exam and Practical Skills Exam thereby becoming a certified EMT-B
4) submit a copy of EMT-B certification card to Columbia University EMS upon receipt of card in mail,
5) apply to interview to volunteer with Columbia University EMS in the Spring 2011 semester,
and 6) not be graduating before December 31st, 2012

Those who fail to meet the above requirements at any point before, during, or after completion of the course forfeit their sponsorship and will be held responsible for paying for the full price of the course.

4 [Probationary membership]
All of those wishing to apply to volunteer with CU-EMS will need to fill out an application and sign up for an interview at the information session. The executive board will be reviewing applications and conducting interviews during the second weekend of September. Every semester CU-EMS accepts 9 to 11 applicants onto the corps as probationary members. A probationary member becomes a full, active member of CU-EMS upon successful completion of his/her first semester with CU-EMS.

All of those who took the sponsored course through CU-EMS are required to interview to join CU-EMS in the semester following completion of the course. Anyone is eligible to apply to join CU-EMS as long as he/she has an EMT-B or Paramedic license, has a valid U.S. Driver's License, and is a full-time student at Columbia, Barnard, or affiliated institutions.

Announcing the Sinai Associates Program

Title: Sinai Associates Program

Fall 2010 Positions

Application Deadline: Fri., Aug. 27, 3 p.m.

About the Program

The Sinai Associates program is a clinical research assistant program in the Emergency Department of the Mt. Sinai Medical Center. Duties include screening and enrolling patients in current clinical research projects, ranging from controlled trials of medical devices to observational studies, among others. Opportunities for high-level involvement in specific research projects are available to motivated, reliable, interested individuals in addition to baseline commitment. Observation of emergency department procedures, resuscitations, and general care is an integrated part of the experience, and in some cases required for execution of research enrollment. The program is connected to a two-credit course being offered in the spring through the Department of Biology, BIOL W3995 - Introduction to clinical research and emergency medicine. The course introduces students to the foundations, goals, and basic interpretation of clinical research, particularly in the emergency setting, and should dovetail with the knowledge acquired working as a Sinai Associates. Dr. David Newman directs the Sinai Associates program and teaches BIOL W3995.

Position Commitment

Sinai Associates will work 2 shifts per week (3 hours each), and attend a few evening training sessions during the semester. The shifts for fall 2010 run from September 20th to December 12th, inclusive.  All new volunteers must attend one of the orientation sessions at Mt. Sinai Hospital, which will take place during the week of September 7th.

The training sessions will be an opportunity to discuss upcoming studies as well as existing ones. Generally these workshops concentrate on anatomy, physiology, and medicine related to the studies.  At some sessions we'll demonstrate study-related medical procedures such as endotracheal intubation or lumbar punctures.  At the first training session we’ll walk through the administration of the Deep Breeze device, part of a study for which all Sinai Associates will be actively enrolling patients this fall.

Apply

If you wish to be considered for one of these positions for the fall 2010 semester, please submit the application by Friday, August 27th to 408 Lewisohn Hall.  If you would like more information, please feel free to e-mail one of our program chiefs: Margo Lederhandler, Amal Masri, or Anna Starikov. We will notify you as soon as possible whether or not you have been chosen.
