St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Volunteer Interpreter Training

We are pleased to announce the St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Language Services Winter Volunteer Interpreting Training. Please fell free to pass this along to your interested student body….

VOLUNTEER MEDICAL INTERPRETING TRAINING

As a medical interpreter you can make a difference!

The Language Services Department at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center has developed a two day training program to enable participants to acquire basic interpretation skills in the medical setting. Trained volunteer interpreters assist providers to meet the health care needs of our culturally diverse patients. A trained medical interpreter contributes to better health outcomes, better communication between provider and Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients, increased clinician and patient satisfaction, and reduced legal risks. This program meets the requirements of the New York Department of Health and adheres to federal mandates and guidelines on cultural and linguistic appropriate health care.

The training will take place at St. Luke's Hospital on Saturday

June 5 and June 12, both days from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Enrollment deadline is May 28 and is open to all Columbia University students.  Interested candidates should contact Maria Carla Faccini, MFaccini@chpnet.org.

Academic Associates Program Expansion Chief Search

We're looking for a few good people to be part of the Academic Associate Program leadership group. The program is expanding to provide a St. Luke's based clinical research experience as well as a new Mt. Sinai based program, both of which will need to be staffed by new, motivated, excited and hardworking Academic Associates Chiefs. Our program is primarily interested in maximizing research data collection, and the implementation of foundational structures that support this. In the past, leadership positions have been focused on providing support including organizational and leadership tasks, training, scheduling, orienting, trouble-shooting, computer skills, and database development and management. This year we are also particularly seeking one applicant with strong computer skills to assist us in developing new databases and troubleshooting technical problems.

Competitive applicants for the available positions will generally have substantial AA experience (>1 semester), and should be available to begin work in the summer months with us. Completion of Bio W3995 is not a mandatory pre-requisite, but is strongly considered a positive attribute. The time commitments and specific tasks are variable and dependent upon specific skills and delegation within the leadership group. If you are interested in being involved in AA leadership and have any questions please consider contacting one of the current group for more specific information about hours, responsibilities and opportunities. The group:

Margo Lederhandler (Mt. Sinai)
Anna Starikov (Mt. Sinai)
Rosa Polan (St. Lukes)

If you decide you are interested please write a brief single paragraph explaining your qualifications and interest, and submit this by email with a CV/resume to academic.associate@gmail.com <mailto:academic.associate@gmail.com> and dnewman@chpnet.org <mailto:dnewman@chpnet.org>. The deadline for applications is Tuesday May 11th, 2010 5pm.

Screening of A Walk to Beautiful- A Documentary about Ethiopian Women Suffering from Obstetric Fistula

Screening of A Walk to Beautiful- A Documentary about Ethiopian Women Suffering from Obstetric Fistula

This Wednesday, April 21st, in Kent 424 at 8 pm, Saving Mothers will be hosting a movie screening of A Walk to Beautiful, a documentary about Ethiopian women whose lives have been affected by obstetric fistula. Obstetric fistula is a severe medical condition resulting from failed childbirth: a hole develops between the bladder and vagina, causing profound emotional and medical consequences.

The World Health Organization has called fistula "the single most dramatic aftermath of neglected childbirth," and more than two million women in the world suffer from this condition, most of them in areas lacking access to adequate medical care.

Women suffering from this condition become incontinent, leak urine uncontrollably, develop irreparable nerve damage in the feet and legs, and are often forced into shame and social isolation in their communities.

A Walk to Beautiful documents the inspiring lives of five Ethiopian women suffering from obstetric fistula, and their medical journeys to the Addis Ababa Hospital, where they hope to find a cure, a new life, and to reclaim their dignity.

Also, one of the filmmakers will be coming to speak to us at the screening. We hope to see you all there at what promises to be a very informative event!

More information about the documentary can be found at: http://www.walktobeautiful.com/

Medical School Visit: Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine

The College Track is a distinct curriculum offered by the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.  The goal of the College Track is to train physician investigators, and the curriculum is designed to foster a passion for scientific inquiry, skills for critical thinking and clinical expertise.  This is the only track in the country that combines an integrated didactic and experiential research curriculum that extends throughout the five years of medical school with a required master’s level thesis based on hypothesis-driven clinical or basic research.  Students graduate with an “MD with Special Qualifications in Biomedical Research.”  The basic science curriculum provides a graduate education approach, with interactive seminars, problem based learning sessions, and laboratories aimed at developing in-depth problem solving skills.  The ideal applicant will have some prior research experience and the ability to learn in self-directed small group settings.  All students receive a full tuition scholarship.
