Summer Opportunity: UC BERKELEY'S OPTO-CAMP - CELEBRATING FIVE YEAR! Applications Now Open!

UC BERKELEY'S OPTO-CAMP - CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS!

The Admissions and Student Affairs Office at UC Berkeley's School of Optometry is pleased to announce that we are celebrating 5 years of our summer "Opto-Camp" program and that we will again offer two sessions this summer, June 21-23 and July 19-21.

The goal of Berkeley Optometry's Opto-Camp is to introduce underrepresented pre-health science majors to Optometry as a potential future career track and to prepare them to be successful

applicants to optometry school.  The objective of Berkeley Optometry's Opto-Camp is to present a three-day "in residence" experience that will provide participants with opportunities to learn about the profession of optometry and the process of becoming an optometrist.

Please note that this year we have incorporated a $125 program fee due to budgetary constraints, however, we are also offering a limited amount of scholarships per session.

Program specifics and the application are linked here:

http://optometry.berkeley.edu/opt_txtpp/admissions/admitoptocamp.html

The application deadline is Monday, April 26, 2010.

Summer Premed Scholars at UVA

A physician who works with our postbacc premed students has organized a one-week summer course for prehealth students.  He teaches an expanded  version of this course to our postbacc premeds over a 12 month period, and it's been very popular (and useful for interviews).  Please share this announcement with your students if you feel there might be someinterest in spending a week in Charlottesville, Virginia in June (the snow might be melted by then!).

"I am happy to announce the offering of a one week course at the University of Virginia entitled "Summer Institute for Premedical Scholars". This is designed to enhance the knowledge and experience of undergraduates interested in a  career as a health  professional.   The intent is to give  pre-health students an in-depth understanding of the

structure, function, financing, and challenges  of the American health care system and the practice of Medicine.   We will also spend some time detailing the Medical School application process and offer some guidelines and advice.  A similar course has been offered at UVa in the January Term and has been popular and highly rated by students. We will be offering this  as a certificate course through the UVa School of Continuing Education and Professional Studies. The dates will be June 7-11, 2010; the course will be held on the UVa Grounds.  We anticipate that enrollment will open in early March, and that tuition and fees will be approximately $950. Other details are still being worked out, but I

hope you will pencil it in to your calendar and let us know if you are interested.

Please communicate with me by email rdp5p@virginia.edu if you have any additional questions.  A tentative syllabus is available to those who wish to have a look at the proposed  structure of the course. I hope that you will find this to be of interest, and that you will join us in June."

summer opportunity CSSR-TCC Internship 2010

Clinical-Based Internship for Pre-Medical Students:

Center for Study of Science and Religion (CSSR) Terrence Cardinal Cooke Health Center (TCC)

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cssr/CSSR-TCC/about.html

CSSR-TCC is a full-time (40 hours/week), 10-week summer internship at a local hospice doing research related to care of the dying (palliative care).

ELIGIBILITY: You may apply if you are currently a pre-med sophomore or junior student in Columbia College, Barnard College, or the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Postbaccalaureate students at the School of General Studies are currently not eligible, our apologies. You must have a particular interest in working with people during the last few weeks or months of their lives. An interest in bioethics would be expected, but is not required.

The fellowship is competitive, with awards based on interest, grades, previous experience, and an interview. No previous research experience is necessary and you do not need to be a biology major to apply.

Students are expected to work full-time for the duration of the program, so participation in CSSR-TCC is not compatible with attending summer school or working at another job.

WHERE: Student will be doing research at the Terence Cardinal Cooke

Health Care Center (TCCHMC, at 5th Avenue and 103rd Street). This is a long-term care facility sponsored by the Archdiocese of New York and affiliated with New York Medical College. It includes patients with advanced AIDS, Huntington Disease, as well as those with cancer and other diseases that typically affect the elderly.

WHEN: Students will be working Mondays through Fridays from June 1st to August 6th, 2010.

THE SUMMER PROJECT

1. Education. You'll read about treatment of the medical and psychosocial conditions of patients whose care is considered palliative (patients that are likely to live less than 6 months) and end-of-life (patients that are likely to live only a few more weeks). You will do computer searches on assigned topics, make periodic presentations and work with the staff in following and evaluating palliative patients.

2. Clinical. While this is not specifically a clinical fellowship, you will participate in some clinical aspects of the programs, including going on rounds with attending physicians, and interviewing some of the palliative patients.

3. Research. You will be expected to perform a research project during the fellowship. Most of the research activities are measures of patient palliative symptoms and needs, the quality of care provided and outcomes. You'll be guided in developing a protocol, and learning some of the basics of research methodology. At the end of the summer, you will complete a written research paper summarizing your results.

TO APPLY:

If you would like to be considered for the internship, please apply online at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cssr/CSSR-TCC/app.html before the deadline. A complete application consists of the following:

1. Resume (attach as a PDF file)

2. Previous research experience

Please provide a summary of your previous experience with laboratory or clinical research and patient care, if applicable.

3. Personal statement (attach as a PDF file)

The personal statement should be no more than a page, single-spaced. It should describe your academic interests, career goals and why you would like to participate in the CSSR-TCC program.

3. An unofficial copy of transcript

4. Letters of recommendation are optional; they should be sent separately to Program Coordinator Tiffany Mitchell (tnm2108@columbia.edu), by the recommender.

When all components of your application are received by the deadline, you will be contacted by e-mail for an interview appointment.

CatarACT Columbia recruiting new members

Are you interested in global health, sustainable development and grassroots activism?

Are you interested in being a part of a movement to scourge West Africa of curable blindness?

If the answer is "yes," then we're interested in YOU!

What is Columbia CatarAct?

We are a chapter of a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) called CatarACT International that is in the business of developing vision. 20 million people in the world suffer from curable blindness. The tragedy of all this is that a cataract surgery costs only $15 dollars and takes merely 5 minutes to perform. We are an organization that incubates local

eye clinics in West Africa to provide a high volume of cataract surgeries. Starting with Ghana, we hope to put an end to the travesty of curable blindness.

This past January, the doors to our pilot clinic in Ghana opened. Using a working model already implemented by a hospital in the developing world, we hope to support and assist our new clinic until it can subsist independently. Our paradigm functions to keep hospitals locally owned, to provide local healthcare workers with training and resources and to

advocate for sustainable development locally in order to build a grassroots movement for support.

At Columbia CatarACT, you will opportunities to help in distinct ways: develop and give presentations for the purposes of education and fundraising, plan and coordinate small and large-scale events, write grants, strategize about our business model for the clinic, be a part of our public relations group and think tank committees. By joining Columbia CatarACT, you will be in a unique position for your voice to have a great impact on our work and progress on the ground in Ghana. Moreover, you will work on what you're passionate about, alongside other students who are doing exactly the same.

Our committees (Public Relations, Fundraising & Finance, Programming, Think Tank, Education) are seeking members to get involved. There are also a few openings on our Exec Board. We are looking for students from any and all backgrounds and interests, from writing to medicine, from marketing to business. As long as you are passionate about global health, social change and sustainable development, your talents are valuable to us.

To learn more:

1.     Come to our information session in Hamilton 306 this Tuesday, February 23 from 8-9pm. There will be food!

2.     Visit CatarACT International's website at www.catar-act.org

Summer 2010 Research Internship:

Volunteer Opportunity in Cardiology Lab

An opportunity for anyone considering a career in medicine, medical research or health care.

You will work closely with a prominent Cardiology researcher and clinician in the fields of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopothy (HCM) and Echocardiography.  HCM causes thickening of the heart muscle in the left ventricle, and is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 30, especially athletes.  It occurs in 1 of every 500 people. It is most important as a cause of disability and death in patients of all ages. Echocardiography is a non-invasive method of examining cardiac anatomy and function. It is a very useful diagnostic tool for clinical care.

Description:  As a Research Assistant, you would work in a busy HCM department with a leading cardiologist, his research nurse and other medical professionals in the department.  Your duties will include  helping us to accumulate an annual follow-up of our 500 HCM patients, working on an annual newsletter and yearly Program report.  You will observe EKGs, echocardiograms, cardiac catheterizations and other medical procedures.  The experience can be adjusted to suit the needs of the Research Assistant.  You will receive sufficient experience to help you decide if health care or medical research is a suitable career for you.  You will have the opportunity to observe patient care in busy outpatient Cardiology practice. We have hosted a summer intern for several years, and our students have uniformly given us positive feedback.

Requirements: You need not have any medical experience, but you must have basic computer skills - Excel and Word, and ability to work well with people.

Specifics: There is no pecuniary compensation for this position.  We offer great experience and expertise.  The position requires volunteering for around 10-15 hours weekly for 6-8 weeks; need to be available on Tuesday and Thursday each week.  Only one position is

available, so please apply early.
