Saving Mothers Research Team at Columbia (SMRT)

Saving Mothers Research Team at Columbia (SMRT)

General Body Meeting this Friday, January 29th, at 7:30 pm

EAST RAMP LOUNGE in LERNER

CURRENTLY RECRUITING COMMITTEE BOARD MEMBERS

According to the World Health Organization, a woman dies every minute from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications. Ninety-nine percent of maternal and infant deaths occur in the developing world; because the formal health care system is not an option due to money and lack of transport, eighty percent of births are performed at home without the aid of health care professionals. Saving Mothers was founded in 2005 by Columbia University post- baccalaureate student, Nichole Young-Lin. In 2006, it won the UC Berkeley Chancellor's Big Ideas Competition, and received nonprofit 510(c)(3) status in January 2009. A group of Columbia University undergraduate students recently formed the Columbia University Chapter of Saving Mothers. This new SGB student organization aims to increase awareness of issues such as maternal and infant mortality through a number of student-run projects. Through the birthing kit initiative, students will be able to assemble and distribute birthing kits to promote safe, hygienic deliveries. Through the research network, students will have the opportunity to conduct research on women's health and the status of women worldwide. Saving Mothers hopes to spread awareness in the Columbia University community and take action to prevent maternal deaths worldwide.

For more information on Saving Mothers, please visit our website, *www.savingmothers.org*. If you have any questions or are interested in joining our chapter, please email Co-Presidents Christine Yeh and Jennifer Hou at *smrtcolumbia@gmail.com*.

Participants in this program work in an active research lab

under the guidance of a biomedical science faculty member. The goal is to expose students to  the challenges, excitement and satisfaction of research.

The SURF program is 7 weeks in length and includes room & board, a living allowance, 8 quarter hours of biology credit and the potential for a guaranteed interview for the entering class at the medical school.

Detailed information, eligibility requirements, and application materials can be obtained by going to the SURF web site at www.oucom.ohiou.edu/surfprog.htm. The deadline for application is February 1, 2010.

Please encourage your students to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity. If you have any questions about the program, please contact the OU-COM Admissions Office at 800-345-1560.

Best regards,

John D. Schriner, Ph.D.

undergraduate research opportunities

Are you interested in doing cutting edge research?

Professor Jung-Chi Liao's Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Columbia University is working on the new burgeoning field of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Since the breakthrough in 2006, iPS cells have caught the attention of the entire scientific community. The ability to reprogram any adult somatic cells back into stem cells using

the addition of only four genes opens the doors for many exciting therapeutic applications. This method allows the generation of patient-specific stem cells that can be induced to differentiate into all cell types, all the while avoiding the controversial ethical issues surrounding embryonic stem cells.

Our lab is interested in shedding light on the molecular pathways involved in this process of reprogramming. We hope to identify important transcription factors and signaling pathways crucial to the process to help better understand the specifics of reprogramming and to better

control it for clinical use. In an innovative interdisciplinary approach of combining Mechanical Engineering with Biology, we are using high resolution microscopy to shed light on this event by tracking single molecules.

We are looking for bright and motivated students for the reprogramming research. This position will teach important molecular biology techniques, expose students to a cutting edge approach to biology, and has the potential for authorship of publications. Research credits may be arranged.

Interested applicants who can commit at least 12 hours per week during the semester should send their resumes to: jcliao@columbia.edu and a brief paragraph on why you are interested in this position and what you might contribute to our lab.

Best regards,

Jung-Chi
