volunteer research opportunities

Volunteer Research Opportunities

These positions require that the applicant(s) be available for at least
10 hours a week, negotiable depending on their availability and our
need. The position would start immediately. This is an unpaid position.
This is an excellent research opportunity for students planning on
applying to PhD programs in Clinical/Health Psychology or medical
school.

These positions are funded by different agencies but all involve
veterans and thus involve working with veteran patients at the VA New
York Harbor Healthcare System. Students will then be added to the
research staff on each project and will need to undergo
appropriateonline research training before full participation in the
projects. We work with patients at both the Manhattan (423 E 23rd
Street) and Brooklyn (800 Poly Place) campuses.

Our work focuses on randomized controlled trials (RCT's) of behavioral
interventions and these opportunities involve working with research
participants in clinical settings. Through this, students can gain
research and clinical experience in our externally funded RCT's of
behavioral interventions to improve cardiovascular risk factors. In the
past we have had excellent students from Columbia University in our
program. Though several of them will continue next semester, some will
leave and we have a few openings. The details of the positions are in
the attached pdf document. An abstract of each research project is also
attached.

We are currently working on 3 externally funded studies. The first is
our federally funded RCT to test the effect of a Stage-Matched
Intervention to Lower Elevated Blood Pressure (SMILE BP) in adults with
hypertension. Second, we have recently been funded by the American
Diabetes Association to evaluate a novel behavioral approach to improve
treatment adherence in diabetics with hyperlipidemia entitled
"TargetingAdherence to Cholesterol-lowering Treatment to Improve Control
Study
(TACTICS)". The third study is funded by the American Heart Association
to evaluate a novel behavioral approach to improve treatment adherence
in stroke patients with hyperlipidemia and/or hypertension
entitled"Preventing Recurrent Events in Veterans Navigating TIA or
Stroke (PREVENTS) trial".
