SAVE THE DATE! May 6th NARRATIVE MEDICINE ROUNDS

CONTAGIOUS:

Cultures, Carriers and the Outbreak Narrative

Dr. Priscilla Wald, Faculty in English and Women?s Studies at Duke  University, reads from her book.  From "Typhoid Mary" to Cold War  "alien" infiltration to body snatchers and the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Wald  shows how evolving ideas about contagion and horror coalesce in  outbreak narratives. Contagious shows how the stories we tell

circumscribe our thinking about global health and human interactions  as the world imagines - or refuses to imagine - the next Great Plague.

without access to clean water?

WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?

Come to the CU Global Water Brigades meeting this Wednesday (April 15th)

at 8pm in Hamilton 303!

What is Global Water Brigades?  It is a movement of passionate students

and professional volunteers from around the world dedicated to improving

access to clean water and sanitation. Our students collaborate with

water experts and community leaders to create and implement new and

innovative solutions to water problems. We currently focus our work in

40 rural Honduran communities where we have 5-year commitments to

long-term sustainable development. A relatively new organization, Global

Water Brigades allows college students from across the world to have the

opportunity to put together new water pipelines in area desperately

needed access to clean water supply. The Brigade begins with an opening

introduction to Honduras, water and the issues we will be facing. Your

group of students will then explore a village in need of a water

project, assess the current situation and design and implement a clean

water solution. Global Water Brigades is a program of Global Brigades,

Inc., a secular nonprofit based in Los Angeles, California whose mission

is to empower students to provide communities in developing nations with

sustainable solutions that improve quality of life while respecting

local culture.  Our vision is to be the largest student-led social

full-time jobs: Research Positions at the Massachusetts General Hospital involving: 1) The Analysis of Cancer Data; 2) Preventive Medicine; 3) Math &

Several full time research positions are available at the Massachusetts General Hospital for graduating seniors interested in spending a year or two before continuing their education in medical or graduate school, as well as for individuals with somewhat more experience, including students with Masters Degrees. Previous holders of this type of position have had the opportunity to work on research projects and to publish scientific papers on their work, and many individuals have published first-authored papers on their work. For students with an interest in medicine, exposure to clinical medicine is encouraged. The work of our group has concerned: the assembly of data, and the development of improved mathematical methods, for predicting the outcome for cancer patients; the identification of screening schedules for reaching the maximal possible reduction in cancer death achievable by cancer screening; the application of modern computer speech and telephony for developing scheduling/reminder systems for increasing the use of preventative medical interventions such as mammography and influenza immunization.

The first position concerns the assembly and analysis of data on cancer and its outcome. An interest in medicine, and a familiarity with the use of Excel and Access would be desirable, but the candidate need not have a strong background in mathematics or computer science.

The second position concerns the analysis of the systems that hospitals use to make medical appointments, with the aim of improving utilization of preventive service such as cancer screening.

Skill with VXML and computer speech would also be desirable.

The fourth position concerns the development of improved mathematical methods for predicting cancer outcome. Related work concerns the development and implementation of novel mathematical methods for Web-based calculators that physicians can use for predicting the risk of cancer recurrence, as well as the development of computer simulation models of cancer progression.

The fifth position concerns the creation of telephone reminder scripts, which our systems will launch to recruit patients to schedule appointments for cancer screening. This position would be suitable for a person with interests in advertising, copywriting, English, marketing, social marketing, persuasion psychology, health communication and public health.
