Interested in summer EMT-B course?

Dear students,

We are trying to gauge interests for the summer EMT-B course. With the new course provider, we are not sure at this point if we will be holding

one. Partly depends on how many people are interested in taking it.
Courses are usually reserved for Columbia full-time students and employees, and with an application process we sponsor everyone. The
specifics- how long the classes will last and which days of the week they will be held- all are TBD. You need to attend all the sessions if you want to take the certificate exam. Please email me back ASAP if you are interested.

Have a nice weekend.

Universal Health Care Debate

Dear Friends:

The Benjamin Rush Society would like to invite you and your organization to a debate on one of the most contentious issues of our time: Should universal health care be the responsibility of the Federal Government?
The debate takes place at Columbia University on April 7 (see details
below) and features Sally Pipes, President of the Pacific Research Institute, Dr. Brian Day, past president of the Canadian Medical Association, Dr. Oliver Fein of Cornell University, and Theodore Marmor of the Yale School of Management.

The Benjamin Rush Society is comprised of medical doctors, residents, fellows, medical students, and policy advocates who believe that the profession of medicine calls its practitioners to serve their patients, rather than the government. Through a series of debates in medical schools around the country, it seeks to challenge the current orthodoxy that government control is the ultimate and inevitable solution to the problems of our healt! h care system. The Benjamin Rush Society hopes to re-define the terms of the health care debate from one that is focused on government-provided health care to one in which free-markets, competition, and greater patient and doctor control are given serious consideration.

Please join us for this important issue.

Sincerely,

Adam Frey
Policy Fellow and Marketing Associate

full-time job: Neuroimaging Coordinator position at Georgetown University Department of Neurology

This just in from one of our alums --

The job was a great opportunity for me during my gap year, and my boss was extremely supportive of my career goals, allowing me to pursue individual research interests, writing additional letters of recommendation to schools, and being really accommodating of interviews.
The position and the things I learned also provided great talking points for med school interviews-ranging from basic science topics to ethical questions about clinical research/trials.

In any case, I hope you'll send this out to the pre-med listserv-my boss hired two CC'08 grads last year and is really happy with us!

The position:

The Research Assistant will work directly under Dr. Chelsea Kidwell, Medical Director of the Georgetown University Stroke Center, and will support her in everyday research activities which center on neuroimaging and stroke clinical trials. The job involves an active role in the coordination of a multi-site acute stroke clinical trial (MR and Recanalization of Stroke Clots Using Embolectomy), assisting in clinical and neuroimaging data collection and analysis, and assisting in grant submission, manuscript preparation, and protocol revisions. The research assistant will interact primarily with study investigators and affiliated members of the GU Stroke Center and participating study sites. Additionally, the incumbent will work closely with members from the Institutional Review Board and Office of Research/Regulatory Affairs to maintain protocol compliance and federal assurances.

The incumbent must be available to start full time in the second week of May, 2009.

summer opportunity Environmental Science Teaching interns

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE TEACHING INTERNS

Deadline: Friday, March 20th

Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science, and Engineering (CSS-MSE) is a new public middle school, currently serving 6th and 7th graders from the Harlem community. In June, CSS-MSE ends its core courses and students participate in a month of experiential learning based around particular scientific topics. Students explore their topic from a variety of perspectives and through many disciplines. Students and teachers work closely together to investigate the topic at hand, go on field trips throughout New York City, and, in some cases, take part in overnight camping field experiences and trips. This year, topics include "Water," "Energy," "Ecology," and "Architecture," among others. CSS-MSE seeks interns interested in working on curriculum development and implementation for our June semesters. Interns should be interested in teaching, have some previous experience in working with students, and have an enthusiasm for science education. Outdoor skills and lifeguard certification are a plus, but not necessary. Internship runs June 1-29, 2009. Please contact Meredith at meredithhill@columbiasecondary.org for more information. Demystifying Medical School Curricula -- What will I Learn and How Can I Be Best Prepared? Herbert Chase, MD, Professor of Clinical Medicine, Department of Nephrology, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons

Please join Herbert Chase, MD, Professor of Clinical Medicine for a talk on medical school curricula. With over 25 years of experience in medical education, Dr. Chase will share his insights and provide recommendations for how premedical students can best prepare for the educational environment at medical school.

All medical school programs focus on three distinct but interrelated domains of medical practice: biomedical science, clinical skills, and medical decision-making. Basic and clinical science courses prepare students to practice "scientific medicine," where diagnosis and therapy are informed by a genuine understanding of human health and disease at a molecular level. Skill-building sessions provide opportunities for students to master history taking and the physical examination.

In-patient and outpatient experiences enable students to integrate their scientific knowledge with their clinical skills and become proficient and effective clinical decision-makers.

Given these three goals, of mastering medical science, clinical skills and medical decision-making, there are tried and true undergraduate experiences which best prepare students for medical school and maximize the chances that their experience will be successful and enriching.

This talk will discuss the typical medical school curriculum and highlight the experiences and skills required to take full advantage of the experience.

WHAT IS CUsmile?

CUsmile is a branch of an international organization called Operation Smile. Operation Smile puts together missions to underdeveloped countries during which doctors, nurses, and others volunteer to assist and perform surgeries on children with facial tumors, cleft lip, cleft palate, and many other conditions. Here at Columbia, our two main objectives are (1) to raise money to contribute to these missions and
(2) to raise awareness and education about these conditions on campus.
