another interesting event this week sponsored by Charles Drew

Current Issue in Health Care Today: A Discussion on Asthma

When: Thursday, November 5 from 8:30pm-10pm

Where: 203 Math

Guest Speaker: Dr. Benjamin Ortiz, assistant attending pediatrician at Harlem Hospital Center and assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at P&S

Asthma is a very interesting chronic disease, particularly in New York City, which has the highest rates of asthma in the nation. Dr. Benjamin Ortiz '92, a former member of Charles Drew, has been able to give back to a community similar to the one in which he grew up by serving as the assistant medical director of the Harlem Children?s Zone's asthma

initiative. HCZ is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1970; its goal is to improve the quality of life for children suffering from asthma in some of New York City?s most devastated neighborhoods. He began with a pilot program in Harlem called Superkids, a 4-week summer day program for asthmatic children, and the program has now added two

more sites in Brooklyn and the Bronx.  Dr. Ortiz is currently an assistant attending pediatrician at Harlem Hospital Center and is assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at P&S. Come for a discussion on asthma and what we can do about it as well as a physician?s role in public health.
